Le delay est un effet sonore basé sur le principe de la chambre d'écho. Il permet de décaler un signal dans le temps entre son arrivée à l'entrée du delay et sa sortie, puis de le répéter régulièrement. La principale différence entre le delay et la ligne à retard utilisée en sonorisation est que cette dernière sert à corriger l'effet d'écho, tandis que le delay en ajoute volontairement. En outre, la où seul le signal traité par la ligne à retard est retransmis, le son issu de l'effet delay vient se superposer au son direct de l'instrument qui y est raccordé.

Une réplique de camping-car construite à flanc de colline, est installée verticalement sur un pierrier naturel. Depuis le village qui lui fait face, un télescope permet d'observer ce qui à l'œil nu apparaît comme une tache blanche dans le paysage. Procédant par confrontation de ces deux éléments touristiques, le télescope grâce auquel on découvre habituellement un point de vue extraordinaire, est retourné pour interroger les mécanismes de perception du paysage.

Cette vidéo cadre un terrain vague de Vancouver derrière lequel on peut voir les montagnes côtières. Ce tableau paysager étiré dans le temps est rythmé par mon travail. Je creuse un trou dans le sol à l’aide d’une pelle et d’un pic. Paradoxalement, ma capacité à être productive et efficace a pour but de produire graduellement une perte, un manque à l’image, ma disparition de celle-ci.

Today I've discovered the photographic work of Belgian photographer FRÉDÉRIC LEFEVER and his approach of architecture. One of the main features of FRÉDÉRIC LEFEVER's photographs is his almost exclusive attention for individual and collective constructions. His interest is focused on creations that he personally likes to call vernacular. He says he deliberately avoids picturesque architecture, such as prestige architecture (buildings that are prestigious for their size, function or designer), industrial architecture (factories, waste land or workmen's houses), or urban architecture. Instead, he prefers constructions "without importance, but with a particular, striking mark". His photographs are not architectural typologies but rather 'portraits' of individuals whom we don't see but whose presence is perceived by the details, colours and arrangements, etc.

GABRIEL OROZCO

Gabriel Orozco creates lyrical works in sculpture, drawing, photography, installation, and video—mediums as diverse as the issues that Orozco's art engenders and explores: how the random and mundane create meaning, the construction of space and time, the mutability of forms. Many of his sculptures are made from found objects, like a deflated soccer ball, a chess board and game pieces, and a trisected and reassembled Citroen automobile. This dialogue with the readymade continues in Orozco's photographs, which document chance encounters with sites and things in his native Mexico and other locations around the world, including India, Iceland, and New York. The artist frequently intervenes in what he discovers, arranging found materials and photographing his

constructions. Sometimes, he transforms the ordinary just by the act of naming, as he does with titles such as Pulpo (Octopus, 1991) which bestows a symbolic, associative meaning onto a tangle of pipes, and Dos parejas (Two Couples, 1990) which anthropomorphizes pairs of clay vases. Another photo appears to be of a cloud-streaked sky, but it is actually a reflection captured in a puddle (Pelota en agua [Ball on Water, 1994]).Recording his movements and artistic activities, Orozco's photographs also serve as poetic markers of the simple but essential relationship between objects and bodies.

AS FAR AS I COULD GET, 2009–2010 John Divola

Un homme – de dos – courant le plus vite possible, le plus loin possible. Le long d’un chemin se perdant dans un horizon lointain, voilé, inconnu ; il repousse sans cesse les limites, ses limites. Au travers de ces photographies, John Divola nous dévoile le déploiement d’un instant, conférant à ses images l’empreinte de l’éternité et les inscrivant de ce fait au sein de l’espace-temps. D’un point de vue plus personnel, le photographe a réalisé ces images à approche de la cinquantaine, lorsque la vie n’apparaît plus comme infinie et immuable. Son travail va donc de pair avec une notion de mortalité furtive ; il se profile comme un point de non-retour : il n’y a plus de choix possible, l’homme ne peut qu’aller de l’avant. Mais John Divola, lui, poursuit sa course sur le chemin de la vie, sans tergiverser. Pour la réalisation de ces photographies, l’artiste a utilisé un film 35 mm à gros grain. Dès lors, sa personne nous semble comme absorbée par l’image elle-même. Récemment, John Divola s’est également servi de la technologie GigaPan – des images panoramiques prises en très haute résolution –, ce qui lui permet d’explorer ses clichés à travers le temps, de se mouvoir parmi les innombrables détails les composant, comme dans un ouvenir que l’on ranime grâce à la mémoire. Le temps et l’espace sont donc deux éléments clés pour la lecture de cette œuvre. Toujours est-il que, en s’éloignant aussi vite qu’il le peut de son appareil photo, John Divola nous laisse nous, observateurs, face à notre existence, avec toutes nos interrogations. (Alexia Brodu)

En 1960, à travers son fameux “ Saut dans le vide ”, Klein symbolisa en quelque sorte son omnipotence d’artiste (en l’occurrence son pouvoir de lévitation), la quête de la transcendance et la fusion dans l’espace de l’artiste auto-sublimé. Sur l’image, paraissant se jeter de la mansarde d’une maison de banlieue, il est en position ascendante, le regard tourné vers le ciel et les cheveux aux vents ; il s’agit moins en fait d’un saut que d’un envol vers le ciel, au-delà des limites humaines et terrestres, vers un temps et un espace an-historiques. (...) Plus de trente ans plus tard, les voyages dans l’espace se sont banalisés, les recherches avant-gardistes se sont essoufflées, les certitudes idéologiques ont été mises à mal, et les artistes ne sont plus en mesure de tenir les comportements prométhéens de leurs aînés. Artist's Statement for "The Struggle to Right Oneself":

Philosopher Martin Heideggar described human existence as a process of perpetual falling, and it is the responsibility of each individual to catch ourselves from our own uncertainty. This unsettling prognosis of life informs my present body of work. I continually return to questions regarding the nature of control and its effects on this perceived responsibility, since beyond the basic laws that govern and maintain our equilibrium, we live in a world that constantly tests our stability in various other forms. War and rumors of war, issues of security, effects of globalization, and the politics of identity are external gravities turned inward, serving to further threaten the precarious balance of self, exaggerating negative feelings of control.

This photographic work is in response to this delicate state. It comprises a culmination of thought and emotion, a tying together of the threads of everything I perceive life has come to represent. It is my understanding and my perspective, which relies on the shifting human conditions of the world that we inhabit. It's exploration resides in the sublime metaphorical space from where balance has been disrupted to the definitive point of no return. It asks the question of what it means to resist the struggle, to simply let go. Or what are the consequences of holding on?

Using myself as model and with the aid of climbing gear and other rigging, I photograph the body as it dangles from dangerous precipices or tumbles down flights of stairs. The captured gesture of the body is designed for plausiblity of action, which grounds the image in reality. However, it is the ambiguiy of the body's position in space that allows and requires the viewer to resolve the full meaning of the photograph. Do we fall? Can we fly? If we fly then loss of control facilitates supreme control.

It is necessary to point out that I do not consider myself a glorified stuntman; nor do I wish to become a sacrifice to art. Therefore, safety is an important factor, however the work does carry with it a potential risk of personal injury as I engage the moment. This is unavoidable as much of the strength of the images lie in the fact that they are all recorded on location.

The images are layered with references to an experienced background in sculpture and painting, and the cinematic quality of the work suggests the influence of commercial film. The dimensions are important to establish a direct relationship between the image and viewer. The images stand as ominous messages and reminders that we are all vulnerable to losing our footing and grasp. Moreover, they convey the primal qualities of the human condition as a precarious balancing act between the struggle against our desire to survive and our fantasy to transcend our humanness. (more)

Taylor-Wood's work explores our physical and emotional limits, often using enigmatic and subversive images to investigate the contemporary psyche. Taylor-Wood's series of works entitled Self Portrait Suspended also test the physical boundaries of the human body, this time using her own, shot in gravity-defying space set against the simple background of her studio wall. The artist appears recumbent, falling in elegant poses that suggest languor rather than swift movement, levitation rather than falling. The artist suspended herself using ropes with the help of a bondage expert, but digitally removed the ropes in the picture to achieve what she describes as ‘a moment of absolute release and freedom'.

Initiée à l’occasion d’un travail collectif pour les 20 ans de l’Agence VU’, la série “La chute” met en scène les corps en apesanteur de danseurs de Hip Hop, de Capoeira et de danse contemporaine. Une “chute de l’ange” des années 2000, toute en tension et en énergie, entre ciel et terre. “ Juste après la crise des banlieues de 2005, entre pesanteur et gravité, j'ai réalisé des photographies en suspension dans une architecture générique et populaire. J’aime qu’à l’ère de Photoshop, la photographie puisse encore surprendre et témoigner d'instants ayant réellement existé, sans trucages, ni manipulations ” explique Denis Darzacq. “(...) mouvement de danse: qui sont ces jeunes vêtus comme il est d’usage

Jusqu’où cela va-t-il les mener ? Comment stopper l’anxiété qui se

Tetsuo Bound to Fail', 1998, Video.

Tetsuo Bound to Fail stands out as milestone in videographic creation in Spain in the late 1990s. The starting-point for the work is the fragmented capture of various actions performed by the artist using a battery of forty cameras arranged in a circle around him. These actions are then rebuilt and shown one after the other, resulting in a cinema-like circular travelling shot. The movement achieved with this effect, and the static quality of the frozen image (upsetting the traditional cinema concept in which a stationary camera records an action as it develops in real time), thrust the viewer into a universe in which the laws of physics are altered. Using a similar system, the action of jumping repeatedly is recorded and then edited to create an effect of levitation. The reference to science fiction is made explicit in the title -Tetsuo is a cult figure in Japanese fantasy cinema - and the artist becomes a kind of decadent super-hero flying over the environs of Bilbao. Prego fashions a visual discourse that distorts the time-and-space limits of the representation, generating a fresh reading of a wide range of visual procedures to achieve a common result going well beyond the limitations imposed by artistic disciplines in themselves.

Walking Distance from the Studio

For the artist Francis Alÿs, born in Belgium in 1959 and now living in Mexico City, it is the ephemeral, fleeting and transient phenomena of life on which he founds his artistic work. Originally trained as an architect, his works comprise predominantly of video pieces, slide shows, drawings and paintings. He develops these from situations he encounters on his walks through the streets of Mexico City. His attention is caught, for instance, by a plastic bag wafting through the air or by homeless people asleep; elsewhere he pushes a block of ice through the sweltering streets until it has evaporated, or with his camera he follows the shifting shadow of the flagpole in the middle of the Plaza Major. This approach situates the artist in the tradition of both the Situationists and the Fluxus movement. As its theme, the exhibition in Wolfsburg examines what in his immediate surroundings, in the public and social space of Mexico City moves him.

The photo below is from a book entitled Plans For Other Days , a book by Janfamily. Janfamily was founded by Royal College of Art graduates Nina Jan Beier and Marie Jan Lund. They were then joined by Daniel Jan Mair, Chosil Jan Kil, and Makin Jan Ma. Based in London, the group creates art projects that take such varied forms as songs, clothes, photography, and film.

Statement: "Nous sommes la Janfamily. Tous et chacun d’entre nous s’appellent Jan. Nous sommes apparentés mais venons dendroits différents. Nous parlons de façon individuelle, ensemble, nous prenons la parole. Voici à quel point nous savons. De quoi nous sommes faits et ce qui nous fait. Nous faisons sens. Cette introduction tirée du catalogue de la Janfamily, Plan for other days résume bien le rapport individu/groupe établit par ce jeune collectif basé à Londres et présenté en décembre à La B.A.N.K. Lexposition regroupe les éditions inédites des travaux réalisés pendant les open-studio itinérants : photographies, broderies, vidéos, chants,... Chaque oeuvre est une mise en scène proposant au spectateur une idée simple pour faire de chaque jour un commencement.

Sculpteur, le principal travail de Daniel Firman se développe autour du corps comme le duplicata ou le mimétisme d’une expérience physique des contraintes terrestres. Ces sculptures le plus souvent envahies d’objets et plus récemment empêtrées dans un vêtement se réfèrent à une contemporanéité des plus immédiates, dont les situations simples frôlant parfois l’absurde, confèrent à ce travail une dimension beckettienne. Daniel Firman glane plus qu’il ne s’approprie, son travail est plutôt fait d’imbrications, de connexions, avec de petites erreurs infiltrées, comme autant de lectures possibles de formes humanisables. Mais ses oeuvres sont autant de formes que d idées. Récemment, la référence aux oeuvres d autres artistes est l indice d une démarche complexe. La mise en espace, préoccupation toute sculpturale, passe par le champ du savoir qui englobe aussi bien des notions de mouvement, de danse, de chorégraphie, de physique et de perception. Si le corps est au centre de la représentation, celui ci n est pas forme obligatoire des productions de l artiste. ((more))

Statement: "In September of 2004, while I was driving around America working on a project called Encounter, I began photographing myself in the landscape as a means of activating the photographic process when no other subjects presented themselves. This artistic exercise opened the door to a new way of making work that completely changed my photographic practice. I went from being an observer, trained by my interest in the American landscape photographers of the last half century, to a photographic collaborator, physically engaging with the landscape as a form of creative play. The series consists of images in which I am either performing an activity dictated in part by the location, or attempting to become part of the scene by assuming an inanimate form. In both cases, I conceal my face to emphasize the physicality of my body and its relationship to the landscape. Although this project began as an exercise, the playfulness, experimentation and sense of humor that emerged from it has come to represent the new way that I approach my work. ((More))
